A new support group for people affected by cardiac events has been established in the Illawarra region.
Two heart health nurses from the Illawarra and Shoalhaven Local Health District, Leah Aitken and Tracey Smith, identified the lack of support for people diagnosed with a heart condition after leaving hospital and rallied to organise the very first Illawarra Heart Support Group meeting in September 2019. The meetings in 2019 were well attended by members living with heart disease, their family and friends. The feedback has been positive, for example, “The support group set up is a very important step to a heart event recovery”, and “please don’t stop this group”. Research recognises support groups as a powerful way to improve wellbeing and help people living with a chronic illness. The group's mission is to provide a safe, positive and friendly place to meet and share information focussed on heart health and wellness.
